The most common spot is the metal frame right under the lid. Open the washer all the way and look at the painted rim where the lid rests when it's closed, usually either on the front or back edge of that recessed area. Some older models also had it on the lower left side of the cabinet, about six inches off the floor. Shine a flashlight on whichever one you find because that silver background makes it surprisingly hard to read.

Sometimes, but honestly don't count on it. The manual usually covers a whole series of models, so it might list a range of numbers or just say something generic like 'Elite 4.8 cu ft series.' The specific number you need is the one stamped on the sticker attached to your actual machine. That's the only one guaranteed to match your exact unit. If you've got your original purchase receipt or warranty card from when you bought it, those sometimes have the full model number written on them. But the sticker on the machine is always the most reliable source and the one you should verify against.

Kenmore Elite top loaders are more complex than their basic lineup. You've got direct-drive motor setups on the 110-series, or suspension rod systems with very specific geometry on the 796-series. A parts diagram shows you exactly how components overlap and connect, which is huge when you're trying to get something apart without snapping a plastic clip or yanking a wire harness the wrong direction. Honestly, I cracked a tub ring retainer once because I didn't realize it was threaded underneath another component. The diagram would've shown me that in two seconds. Don't go in blind when the diagram is right there for free.

Check your original purchase receipt or any warranty paperwork you kept. If you registered the appliance, Sears or whatever retailer sold it to you might have the number on file, so a quick call or account login could pull it up. Also look for a yellow EnergyGuide sticker on the back of the machine, it's sometimes still readable even when the model sticker isn't. Inside the machine, technicians sometimes tuck a tech sheet into the back of the control console or tape it inside the cabinet door. That sheet will have the model number printed on it. Last resort, measure the tub capacity and match it to known models for that series.

Depends on what you mean by better. The Elite lineup usually came with bigger tub capacity, more wash cycles, and features like steam or auto-sensing load balancing. But here's the thing, since they were built by different manufacturers depending on the year, quality varied a lot. An Elite 796-series built by LG has a completely different reliability track record than an Elite 110-series built by Whirlpool. So 'Elite' just means it was higher up in that year's lineup, not that it's universally better. For repairs, the Elite designation mostly just means more complexity and sometimes more expensive parts.
